Spending Cuts Put Our Money Advice Service Under Threat

As a not for profit organisation South Derbyshire Citizens Advice Bureau rely on funding from charities, businesses and government funded organisations.

Like many other organisations, the CAB has been affected by the spending cuts.  After March this year the area most affected will be our Money Advice service and its administration support - the very backbone of the work we do here at the CAB.

As the only free money advice provider in South Derbyshire, last year our Money Advice Team were able to help 977 local people improve their financial circumstances.  The loss of funding to us this year deals a double blow, in that our service is threatened at a time when so many more people are going to be in need of this help.

If your organisation can help in any way, such as sponsorship of a project, or a one-off donation, then please contact Jackie Spencer on 01283 210108.

PRESS RELEASE - 27 January 2011

Government Threat to Advice for those in Debt

A local advice charity is extremely concerned by a government statement that the Financial Inclusion Fund will end in March.  Mark Hoban, Financial Secretary to the Treasury gave a written statement on 19 January saying the fund would end in March 2011.  South Derbyshire Citizens Advice Bureau use the fund to employ two thirds of their debt advice Caseworkers.  The Bureau, based in Church Gresley, helped nearly 1000 people manage their debts in 2009-2010, including getting creditors to agree to write off £1,158,845.

“The current financial climate is placing a great deal of pressure on the people of South Derbyshire” said the bureau’s Chief Executive Jackie Spencer.  “It would be terrible if our free advice is threatened by government cuts”.

Jackie adds “Our debt advice Caseworks are highly trained specialist advisors; it would be devastating to loose this expertise through lack of funds.  Even to replace any of the team at a later date would be at a substantial cost to the Bureau in time, money and resources.”
